It's known as "The Forgotten War", but all Americans should learn about it and remember it ... and that's where you can help. You have been asked to develop a "Korea 9 3 2 1" webpage to cover the basic information everyone should know about the Korean War - all on one page. Your page should include ...
9 - facts about the causes, events, and impact of the Korean War (look at my examples below) 3 - photos that help tell the story of the war, with descriptive captions 2 - maps that help to explain the war. 1 - quote that is essential to understanding the war, with authors and context
9 -Come up with 9 great factsthat everyone should know about "The Forgotten War", using the examples below as guides. I will have my own list that will use to compare to yours - hopefully you will ge most of the facts on my list! At least 2 of the facts should be about the CAUSES of the war, at least 3 of the facts should be about the WAR itself, and at least 2 facts should be about the EFFECTS OR IMPACT of the war. The other two can be from any category.
1. In 1948, South Korea formed a democratic government aided by the United States, but the Soviets countered by assisting North Korea in creating a communist government. Both of the governments wanted to rule the entire nation.
2. The Soviets developed a presence north of the 38th parallel (North Korea), and American troops controlled land south of the 38th parallel (South Korea).
3.North Korea crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea in June 1950 with the help of the Soviet Union
4. U.S. declared its cold war policy and was forced to decide the amount of risk for it to take in a region where communist China loomed nearby and the Soviet Union clearly remained committed.
5. The United Nations assisted the United States in preventing communist control in South Korea by getting sixteen nations to provide soldiers for the United Nations force.
6.The North Koreans pushed the South Koreans all the way down to Pusan, but General MacArthur landed his troops at Inchon. This meant the North Korean troops were surrounded from the North and South, so they retreated north of the 38th parallel. The UN forces followed the North Koreans all the way to the Yalu River, where the Chinese warned them to stop.
7. The UN forces refused to stop so they pushed on toward the Yalu River until Chinese Communist forces attacked UN forces across the Yalu River and pushed them back south of the 38th parallel.
8. A primarily agricultural country whose troops were far less trained than those of North Korea, South Korea struggled to defend itself.
9. General MacArthur neglected President Truman's orders to win support for his war aims. President Truman fired him in April 1951 because of he thought MacArthur's public criticism of his command was "undermining civilian control of the military." This may lead to a third global war.
3 - Photos should help tell the story of the war, so find three photos that work ... and provide a descriptive caption, like the one on my example.
1. South Korean Marines go in to the L.C.V.P. Note the sign in the boat. "15" signifies the wave number and "8" signifies the position the boat will fill, in the wave.
2. this bridge has become the key crossing point on the Han River where United Nations Forces are driving north in pursuit of North Korean Reds.
3. President Harry S. Truman is met at Wake Island by Far East Commander General Douglas MacArthur.

1. This map marks the battles that took place in Korean throughout the Korean War. It shows battles north and south of the 38th parallel.
2. This map shows the Western Pacific theater in the Korean War.
1 - You know historical quotes can bring old crusty things to like, so find at least one decent quote that helps add to the content of the Korean War (and provide some context for the quotes). For example ...
"The attack upon Korea makes it plain beyond all doubt that Communism has passed beyond the use of subversion to conquer independent nations and will now use armed invasion and war."- President Harry S Truman in his speech describing the military involvement of the US in Korea, without a declaration of war from Congress.
"Old soldiers never die; they just fade away."
- Gen. MacArthur. Address to Congress, April 19, 1951
After a war, soldiers grow older but they never die because their legacy in the war continues to live on through generations. Although their physical being may be gone, their actions in the war always stay present. It may also mean that don't die, but they are more and more forgotten as the years go on and new wars develop.
